
Text: 2 Timothy 2:1-7
Gospel and the Next Generation
Background:
- Paul wrote this second letter to Timothy during his second imprisonment in Rome (AD 64–65).
- This letter is a call to be courageous and endurance amid opposition and suffering for the sake of the gospel.
- 2 Timothy 1:1-7, Paul expresses his affectionate greetings to Timothy, his “beloved child”
- 2 Timothy 1:8-14, Paul exhorts Timothy to have gospel endurance
- 2 Timothy 15-18, Paul reveals those people who abandoned him
The future of the local church, the next generation of believers, and those who are yet to believe are at stake if we don’t faithfully entrust the gospel of Jesus Christ today.
- Be Strengthened by God’s Grace (v1)
- The grace of God transforms our feeling
- The grace of Jesus transforms our thinking
- The grace of God transforms our doing
- Entrust the Good Deposit of the Gospel (v2)
- The Gospel – Christ crucified
- The Sufficiency of God’s Word
- Love for the Local Church
- A Life Worthy of the Gospel
- Look for men and women who are faithful
- Then these faithful men and women will eventually disciple others
- Life on Life is the way we entrust the gospel

- Endure Hardships Together (v3-6)
- When you embrace the gospel, be ready to suffer.
- Have a single focus like a soldier (v4)
- Have a godly discipline like an athlete (v5)
- Have an enduring expectation towards the prize (v6)
- When you embrace the gospel, be ready to suffer.
- Examine your life and your local church in light of God’s truth (v7)
- Do I thirst for God?
- Do I still grieve over sin?
- Am I governed by God’s Word?
- Do you have a growing concern for the spiritual and temporal needs of others?
- Am I a quicker forgiver? Am I more loving?
2 Timothy 4:6-7, “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Conclusion:
For the sake of God’s glory and the joy of the saints at UCBC:
- Humbly seek together God’s grace
- Grow and be accountable to each other
- Faithfully entrust the gospel corporately
- Endure hardships with joy and gladness
